First Data Café by DKZ.2R in Cologne: Empowering Researchers with Data Competence

On April 16, 2025, the Rhine-Ruhr Center for Scientific Data Literacy (DKZ.2R) hosted its very first Data Café at the Mensa Zülpicher Straße in Cologne. This event marked a significant milestone in our mission to support researchers across various disciplines in enhancing their data competencies. The Data Café provided an informal setting for students, PhD candidates, and early-career postdocs to engage with data experts on topics ranging from research data management to machine learning applications, and questions on high performance computing.

Held from 10 AM to 2:30 PM, the event attracted a diverse group of attendees, some eager to discuss practical aspects of data handling. Participants sought advice on structuring research files, refining statistical analyses, and exploring the integration of machine learning techniques into their projects. Each consultation was complemented by a complimentary beverage from the coffee bar, fostering a relaxed atmosphere conducive to open dialogue.

Looking ahead, DKZ.2R plans to expand the Data Café concept to other locations within the Rhine-Ruhr region, continuing to provide accessible, expert guidance to the research community.

We are grateful to all participants and look forward to fostering further collaborations that enhance data literacy and interdisciplinary research.
