Data Competence College II

Event Aachen
Registration Closed

The second DKZ.2R Data Competence College will be hosted from November 24th to 26th at the IT center of RWTH Aachen. Based on the concept of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin or the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, we have invited individuals with high data competence from different scientific fields (“Data Experts”) as part of the data competence college.

Data Experts:

Prof. Julian Kunkel, and Prof. Bodo Winter confirmed their participation as Data Experts for the second Data Competence College.

Julian Kunkel is a Professor for high performance computing at the university of Göttingen. Furthermore he is the deputy leader of the GWDG, a service organization which works in conjunction with the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Society as a data and IT service center. To find out more about Prof. Kunkel and his work on e.g. Data-driven workflows, parallel file systems, or the application of machine learning methods visit his website. Julian will present a talk on “Data Management Approaches and Challenges in Science and Research - These are my voyages”.

Bodo Winter is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Birmingham. In his research, he uses data science-driven approaches to study multimodal communication. A unifying theme across his work is a strong commitment to open science and reproducible research practices. He has also written the textbook Statistics for Linguists: An Introduction Using R, an introductory textbook on statistical modelling. to find out more about Prof. Winter and his work, visit his website. Bodo will present a talk on “Designing for Diversity: Bayesian Methods and the Generalizability Crisis”.

For three days we aim to create a space where local scientists, and especially early career researchers, can learn from the data experts and each other regarding research data and methods but also data experts can inspire each other. The schedule includes keynote presentations by all data experts, poster presentations by the participants, and 1:1 sessions between data experts and early career researchers, as well as a variety of method- and data-related workshops. We aim at creating an environment in which everyone feels safe to give input, share their knowledge and learn from the other participants and experts.

The exchange with and among experts from different disciplines and/or areas of focus in particular can provide new impetus for data processing or methodical data analysis. In this way, the DKZ.2R Data Competence College forms the focus of mutual enrichment participants and experts alike.

To find out more about the last data competence college visit the DKZ.2R Zenodo community.

FDM-Werkstatt - Into the RDM-Toolbox!

The Center of Data Litercacy (German: “Zentrum für Datenkompetenz”) DKZ.2R was officially launched mid November 2023. Already a month later we joined forces with fdm.nrw to organise the very first DKZ.2R-event (find the call for participation here). The “FDM-Werkstatt – Into the RDM-Toolbox” took place from March 18 to 20, 2024 at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University. In total, 50 participants from all over Germany took part in the workshops. Many of them brought their own topics of interest with them and presented it in one of the 12 sessions. The contents of the sessions ranged from low-level introductions and RDM-basics to elaborate and in-detail coding sessions. For three days we worked together, discussed use cases and new RDM tools. But we also enjoyed the social program such as a tour of the AiX Cave and the server room of the ITC’s High Performance Computing Center. There was a good balance between cognitively demanding workshop sessions and more relaxing social events and lunch breaks which hopefully resulted in an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all participants. On the very last day of the workshop we offered a session to especially discuss ideas and directions for the DKZ.2R. The feedback we got in this session will help us in moving forward with the DKZ.2R and making a lasting impact for future researchers.

A Survival Guide to Research Data Sharing Services in the Rhine-Ruhr Region

There are a lot of reasons why collaborating with other researchers on scientific projects is great! It provides new perspectives and gives you the chance to benefit from other people’s knowledge and input. When it comes to sharing and exchanging data across multiple locations and devices however, researchers are often disoriented and don’t know which tools, cloud services and so on are safe to share data in a secure and ethical way.
