New Courses and Events by the DKZ.2R

We’ve prepared several new courses and events to help you improve your data literacy skills through the Rhine-Ruhr Center for Scientific Data Literacy.
As always, all our offers are free of charge thanks to BMFTR (German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology, and Space) funding!

DKZ.2R Data Competence College (November 24th - 26th, Aachen)
The second edition of this event is designed to empower early career researchers with practical, interdisciplinary data skills. For this iteration we are setting a special focus on data and study reproducibility with expert talks by:

  • Prof. Julian Kunkel[https://gwdg.de/research-education/researchgroup_kunkel/], Professor for high performance computing at the university of Göttingen and deputy leader of the GWDG, a service organization of the University Göttingen and the Max-Planck Society.
  • Prof. Bodo Winter[https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/elal/winter-bodo], Professor of Linguistics at the university of Birmingham who focuses on data-driven approaches to study multimodal communication. Bodo stands for a strong commitment to open science and reproducible research practices.
  • Prof Maribel Acosta[https://www.cs.cit.tum.de/cde/people/maribel-acosta/], Professor for Data Engineering at the TU Munich. Her research lies in the areas of Databases, Semantic Web, and Artificial Intelligence.

Why join?
As a participant you will have the chance to present your work or research ideas as a poster or talk no matter whether you are are at the very beginning of your research journey or already midway. You will also have the chance to take part in practical hands-on workshops, and meet our data experts in 1:1 sessions to specifically discuss your data, methods, and research ideas!

Who can participate?
All individuals who identify as early career researchers (e.g. advanced master’s students, PhD students or early PostDocs), as long as they’re affiliated with a university or research institution in Germany (early career researchers from other European countries please contact info@dkz.2r.de before registering).

Workshop: LaTeX for Academic publishing (October 27th, Essen)
We are happy to announce another one of our well-received Carpentries workshops “LaTeX for Academic Publishing”! This time the event will take place at the University of Duisburg-Essen Campus Essen. The workshop will cover the basics of structuring and writing a LaTeX document from scratch, as well as including graphics, tables, managing references, and other common tasks.

The workshop also serves as a satellite event to our Data Café - Summer closing edition on October 28th at the University of Duisburg-Essen (More info).

Workshop: Plotting and Programming in Python (November 3rd, Essen)
In November we are offering an official Carpentries workshop “Plotting and Programming in Python”.
We will cover the following topics (selection):

  • Variables and Assignment
  • Importing Libraries and Reading Tabular Data
  • For Loops and Conditional Statements

Data Challenge – Metadata & Data Structuring (November 7th, Cologne)
