As part of our “Trainings” work package, the DKZ.2R creates, curates and presents a variety of free trainings, seminars and courses. Our next offering will be a one and a half day carpentries-style workshop on basic machine learning using python and scikit-learn, to be presented at RWTH Aachen University on 24th and 25th of July, 2025. The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • What is Machine Learning / Why bother?
  • Supervised Methods (Regression / Classification)
  • Ensemble Methods
  • Unsupervised Methods (Clustering / Dimensionality Reduction)
  • Neural Networks
  • Ethics and Implications of Machine Learning

Workshop material is available online and will be presented by instructors who will walk you through the steps and are available for questions throughout the event. If you are interested in taking part in the workshop, you can sign up here.

A basic familiarity with Python is expected, including writing for loops, conditional statements, using functions, and importing libraries.

The Carpentries Workshop by DKZ.2R: Python basics and plotting The workshop will be hosted on-site at RWTH Aachen University and is open for up to 25 participants. The workshop material is available online and will be presented by official carpentry instructors who will walk you through the steps and are available for questions the whole time. The course is teaching the very basics of Python and although some experience with other scripting/programming languages is beneficial, no prior knowledge is required for the course. Data Competence College

The first Data Competence College will be hosted from March 26th to 28th at the IT center of RWTH Aachen. Based on the concept of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin or the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, we have invited four individuals with high data competence from different scientific fields (“Data Experts”) as part of the data competence college.

As of now, Prof. Sebastian Houben from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (specialist in AI and autonomous systems), and Dr. Moritz Wolter from University of Bonn (expert in high performance computing and machine learning) have already confirmed their participation.

We are happy to announce our very first Data Café which will take place on April 16th at the Mensa Zülpicher Straße in Cologne. We’ll be right next to the Coffee Bar!

the aim of the event is to provide informal consulting opportunities for students, PhD’s, and early PostDocs such as: quick questions on e.g. how to structure your files in a way it makes sense, second opinions on your statistical analysis or data visualization, or even a first chat regarding the possibility of using machine learning methods for your project.
