FAIR & Reproducible Data: From Data Collection to Reusable Data and Reproducible Research – Hackathon

How is reproducible research created—and how can we tell whether it works?

This interdisciplinary hackathon for researchers and students focuses on FAIR data, research data management, and reproducibility. Working in small groups, participants will collect their own data, document it according to FAIR principles, and consider reproducibility from the very beginning of the research process. Afterward, groups will exchange their datasets, documentation, and research notes:

• Will others be able to reproduce your results using only the data and descriptions you provide?
• Will they reach different conclusions?
• Are the datasets sufficiently documented, structured, and transparent to enable reuse by others?

The event goes beyond technical implementation. It explores data quality and reusability, the reproducibility of research results, while reflecting on the importance of clearly communicating data, methods, and workflows.

Introduction to Working with Git

A workshop offered in collaboration with the Graduate center of Bonn University.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to get started using git to control files on their devices, connecting their local repositories with a remote website, and working collaboratively with other participants. All content will be demonstrated with live-coding, and supported with independent exercises.

Plotting & Programming with Python - FLINTA course

As part of our “Trainings” work package, the DKZ.2R creates, curates and presents a variety of free trainings, seminars and courses. Our next offering will be a two-day introductory workshop on python, to be presented at RWTH Aachen University on the 27th and 29th of May, 2026 in collaboation with the RWTH Aachen IT-Center.

This workshop is offered especially for FLINTA early career researchers (anyone identifying as Female, Lesbian, Inter, Non-binary, Trans, or Agender) and will be presented by FLINTA instructors.

Archaeoanalysis of Metadata Processing – Hackathon

Join us for a multi-day event where we will dive into bibliographic metadata. This is a multi-disciplinary event for researchers and students to come together to explore a dataset together, sharing their expertise and building resuable tools and workflows. No prior experience is needed - just bring a laptop! Consultants from DKZ.2R will be on hand to help implement ideas and provide support with data retrieval, cleaning, and transformation.

Battle of the Editors - Satellite Event

This is a fast-paced, playful competition in which participants use their editor of choice to complete a series of data and text challenges as quickly and accurately as possible. Whether you swear by Vim, live inside Emacs, prefer a modern IDE, or rely on OpenRefine for data wrangling — bring your setup and prove your skills.

Seminar - Statistical and Machine Learning Methods

Course Description and Goals:

Statistical learning is a field that teaches students how to analyze and interpret data by applying statistical methods and machine learning algorithms to uncover patterns, make predictions, and gain insights from data. The syllabus includes: • Statistical and machine learning methods, including linear and polynomial regression, logistic regression, and linear discriminant analysis. • Model validation techniques such as cross-validation and bootstrap, model selection, and regularization methods (ridge and lasso). • Nonlinear models, splines, and generalized additive models. • Tree-based methods, including random forests and boosting. • Support-vector machines and an introduction to causal inference. • Unsupervised learning methods such as principal components analysis and clustering (k-means and hierarchical). Course Description and Goals:

The course teaches advanced topics in R programming that become increasingly relevant for everyday applications in both applied and theoretical econometrics and empirical economics. It covers, amongst other topics:

• Advanced programming concepts, including object orientation, profiling, and debugging. • Packages for modern applications in data science. • Cutting-edge R extensions, for example for parallel computing and C++ integration. • Applications relevant to empirical economics and econometrics.

This time the event will take place on April 9th and 10th at the University of Cologne. The workshop will cover the basics of structuring and writing a LaTeX document, as well as including graphics, tables, managing references, and other common tasks.

Fundamentals of Metadata Course

The Rhine-Ruhr Center for Scientific Data Literacy (DKZ.2R) will be presenting the Carpentries Course “Fundamentals of Metadata” Developed by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC).

Short Description: This is a fundamentals course targeted at researchers from all fields who want to annotate their research data in a well structured and meaningful way. From the definition and importance of metadata to the use of metadata frameworks using JSON you will discover how to document your data in a hands-on experience.
This event functions as a satellite event to the the DKZ.2R Metadata Challenge, happening on March 12th, also at the University of Bonn. Data Competence College III

Based on the concept of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin or the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, we have invited individuals with high data competence from different scientific fields (“Data Experts”) as part of the data competence college.

Data Analytics for Engineering Data Using Machine Learning

We are happy to announce our new course “Data analytics for engineering data using machine learning”. The event will take place online on three consecutive days in february of 2026. This three-day online workshop addresses the preparation, analysis and interpretation of numerical simulation data by machine learning methods. Besides the introduction of the most important concepts like clustering, dimensionality reduction, visualization and prediction, this course provides several practical hands-on tutorials using the python libraries numpy, scikit-learn and pytorch as well as the SCAI DataViewer.

Hackathon DKZ.2RxQUADRIGA

On May 8th, the Data Literacy Centers DKZ.2R and QUADRIGA are teaming up for a hackathon on the topic of text-corrections using LLM’s.

This will be an internal event for members of the Data Literacy Centers DKZ.2R and QUADRIGA.

The Data Literacy Center QUADRIGA is primarily focused on creating high-quality educational resources for the digital humanities. In our hackathon we will work on a use casedealing with historical texts from the time of the spanish flu. Channelling our resources and competencies will not only help us to strengthen the connections between our two Data Literacy Centers but will also provide us with a use case on how to use LLMs for the post-correction of automatically recognized historical texts which can be used for training purposes such as Data Challenges and Workshops in a variety of different domains.

DataLad Workshop and Hackathon

Organizing decentrally stored data requires more than just a good overview and discipline. The right tool plays a crucial role in successful data management and productive collaboration in research teams. One such tool is DataLad, whose powerful features make it much easier to manage, version and distribute large amounts of data and promote the reproducibility of research processes. To help researchers use DataLad efficiently and deepen their knowledge, the data competence centers DKZ.2R, WiNoDa and the NFDI consortia NFDI4ING and NFDI4Objects are organizing a three-day workshop. From June 30 to July 2, there will be many opportunities to try out practice-oriented content and intensive collaboration with DataLad at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University.

Data Competence College

The first Data Competence College will be hosted from March 26th to 28th at the IT center of RWTH Aachen. Based on the concept of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin or the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, we have invited four individuals with high data competence from different scientific fields (“Data Experts”) as part of the data competence college.

As of now, Prof. Sebastian Houben from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (specialist in AI and autonomous systems), and Dr. Moritz Wolter from University of Bonn (expert in high performance computing and machine learning) have already confirmed their participation.

Spring School 2025 in Aachen – Research Data Management in Materials Science and Engineering

Enabling a consistent and unobstructed standardization of research data will lead to substantial improvements in efficiency and synergies/collaboration among individual researchers and well-designed IT systems. In the era of digital infrastructures, this measure holds paramount importance in shaping the future of research. For the data to be sustainable and reusable, it must adhere to the “FAIR Data Principles”, meaning it should be “Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable”. The FAIR principles will be a cornerstone of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) implementation. Nowadays, Data Management Plans (DMPs) have become a requirement for project applications in Horizon Europe and are increasingly being demanded by various funding organizations, including the German Science Foundation (DFG), among others. The scientific consortium NFDI-MatWerk (National Research Data Infrastructure) focuses on the research area Materials Science & Materials Engineering (MSE). The central challenge is the digital representation of materials and their relevant process and load parameters. NFDI-MatWerk will provide in this summer school tailored information and solutions for dealing with research data in MSE.

Workshop at Volkswagenstiftung Themenwoche Digitale Kompetenzen in der Wissenschaft

DKZ.2R teamed up with another data literacy center QUADRIGA, NFDIxCS, and NFDI4DS, to host a workshop on the topic of “Research Data and Research Software Competencies from the Perspective of Computer and Data Science” at the Themenwoche Digitale Kompetenzen in der Wissenschaft of the Volkswagenstiftung. Together with a diverse group of 35 participants from different data-literacy initiatives we will explore intersections between projects, present successful educational formats, identify gaps in current educational offerings, and collaboratively create new formats and an overall didactic framework. We are very much looking forward to this workshop week which will happen from the 2nd to 4th of December 2024 at the Xplanatorium in Hannover Herrenhausen.
